First impressions: Wow. The first few chapters of this book are gorgeous. Gemma is a feisty 16 British girl living in India with her parents, and witnesses the tragic death of her mother under mysterious circumstances she has a difficult time processing. We don't know what Gemma saw, but it was scary and strange and compelling.

I really want to give this book 3.5 stars, but since I am willing to read the next book in this triology, I will give it 4 stars. I thought the characters were really interesting and I appreciate the fact that the author presented modern-day teen problems (self-mutilation, self-esteem issues, etc.) to these Victorian teens. I struggled with this book and had to talk myself into finishing it. It's the genre that's not really my thing, more so than the characters or writing. I seriously doubt I'll read the second in the series, as there are too many books on my To Read shelf that I'd rather dive in to.
