Outlander (Outlander, #1) in SOS: Serious Overload of Series

I had added OUTLANDER to be TBR Shelf on Goodreads years ago. After hearing about the tv show I had decided to give it ago, because I absolutely loved the first couple episodes of the tv series. But this turned out to be a " I can't take it anymore, I have to DNF it" book. OUTLANDER was not bad by any means. This book is jam-packed with so much details and history and I am not a huge fan of all that extra stuff. I constantly went from bored to excited many times while reading this.

One thing I don't get is I have heard about this book having a lot of sex scenes or whatever. What sex scenes?! That is not what you call a sex scenes.These sex scenes reminded me of Twilight, Breaking Dawn were they are about to have sex but then the author doesn't write the actual sex scene, we just skip to when they finished. So, um. just no. I have experience two to three of them in OUTLANDER.

I felt like I barely got to experience my Jamie fill, because I was bombarded with all this huge history and details junk. I loved that Jamie confided a lot in Claire. And I loved all the conversations he has with Claire. That stuff I really loved reading, the actual love story. I did get to the beating scene. I have a strong opinion about beating woman. I didn't like it or enjoy it. I understand that that is what happened back then, but STILL! It made Jamie's personality a lot more unattractive to me, because he came of as this guy that was different from all the rest. And that was just a huge turn off for me.

At this point I may or may not decide to continue with this book in the future. I mean many readers had started the book, stopped, dropped it, and came back to complete it. But right now I'm done. I think i gave this book a fair good chance though, I almost made it through half the book and at a 800 page book that is giving it a fair chance. I think I'll just experience this story through the tv series, because I love the tv series. And watching this type of story on screen seems to be more enjoyable than reading for me. ...more

I can't make up my mind about this book... There were parts I truly enjoyed reading (the characterization of people, description of places, the historical references, the cultural details embedded into the narration) and then there were parts I struggled to read... so very much (entire bits of story that maybe, could have been dropped, because it wouldn't have affected the story in the end). Okay, don't hate me, but this book wasn't all that amazing. It was good, but not stellar. For an 850 page book, the pace moved pretty well, and the story was good, but the book just didn't grip me, make me stay up all night reading, etc. I blame Jamie. He seemed like a whiner, and I got tired of hearing about how much he got beat up. I mean, this is a Scottish clansman. Man up already! I will continue with the series though. ...more

I was unable to put this book down. Truly one of the best books I have ever read. Amazing characters. Claire and Jamie are my all time favorite couple. Diana has a true gift for storytelling and understanding human emotion. I was completely enraptured by the great storytelling and compelling writing.
