For some reason I got the sequence of this series mixed up and I ended up reading this book first.
Although it was violent and very intense I enjoyed it a lot and thought it was beautifully written. I was actually glad the author took the plunge and didn't fall short...I've read so many books where the heroine is miraculously saved right at the moment before she is raped or tortured, and it perpetuates the notion that a woman is tainted and unworthy after a rape.
