2 ½-3 stars – Paranormal/Fantasy/Young Adult

This is one of the rare times that I actually liked the movie a lot more than the book. Perhaps I would’ve enjoyed the story more had I read it before seeing the film. But alas, it was disappointing and boring after experiencing City of Bones on the big screen.

I don’t have much interest now in reading the rest of the series, except that I’m anxious for answers to some unresolved questions and events from this and the movie.

Mainly.....

A solid YA story, I liked City of Bones. It was a pleasant and quick read. A few cliched character traits but i think teens will find Clary, Simon and Jace characters they can relate to, and it will be interesting to see how they grow over over the course of the series.
I thought the pace was good, integrating background information and action smoothly. even though the plot was somewhat predictable.
I'll be happy to pick up the sequels, though perhaps not as a priority.

A decent narration. Definitely sounded like a teen, so she fit Clary well, but wasn't as adept at differentiating between the different characters as more experienced narrators. Still, very enjoyable. ...more

An enjoyable start to the Mortal Instruments trilogy. All of the characters were enjoyable enough, though none were particularly developed. The relationship between Clary and Jace seemed a bit forced to me, as I didn't see where the affection actually started. And normally Simon is the character I would root for (the equivalent of Seth in Marr's Wicked Lovely), but I honestly didn't feel there was enough there for me to care about. I would have liked more story on Alec and Isabelle, but maybe th ...more

Hmm well to be honest from the reviews I'd read before starting this book, i wasn't expecting much. It wasn't as bad as i thought though, there were a lot of cringe worthy moments and i did find myself skimming the last few chapters. The 'final showdown' couldn't have had me less interested even after finding out the truth, and all secrets were out etc. (which by the way most people probably figured out). I probably will pick out the next two from my library as I did the first, just to see what ...more

I really enjoyed this book. Usually the first book in a series is a little hard to take with all the world building info but Cassandra does an amazing job of not overloading you. The characters are very real and I love the interaction between them. I am diving right into the next one.

Clary Fray always thought she was an average girl until she started seeing people that no one else could. Clary finds herself dragged into a world of warriors and demons, revealing secrets about her past. When her mother goes missing, she finds herself reliant on a group of teenage Shadowhunters and begins a journey to discover the secrets hidden in her past.

This is a hard book to review. It has an addictive style and fast pace that makes the book great fun to read, but at the same time there i

I must admit that I liked this book. After reading other reviews noting its similarities to other well known series, I realized that I hadn't really noticed that while reading this book. I simply read it for what it was and found myself enjoying it.

Clary finds herself suddenly and violently thrust into a world that shouldn't have been real. She soon discovered that her mother has been lying to her all her life, that she was a 'shadowhunter' and that she was born to fight. Along the way, she d

What I learned from this book: that a 33 year old should not read books for young adults. I couldn't even finish this one. I really wanted to like it but the writing was awful and the characters were so annoying.
Update - listened to the audiobook as a 42 year old😂and it was more tolerable. I think I watched the series so I knew what was going on more. Didn’t concentrate on it but it was something to listen to while I was working. I do want to listen to the next book. I still think the characters

I could NOT put this series down!! I went through one of them each day. I saw reviews compare it to the Harry Potter series and I guess I can see where the individuals found their similarities, but I never got the impression at all throughout any of the books. This is a series I will read again, and Jace remains one of my main man favs :)
