As we all know, a deal with the devil, or Lucifer, never works out quite how the promise seems. Viscount Dewhurst, or Voss, lives a life of pleasure and mischief after taking the deal offered by Lucifer to become a Dracule. As two factions of the Dracule line up on opposing sides, he stays neutral, until he gets drawn in over a woman. She is Angelica Woodmore, gifted with the sight and the second of three sisters. A story full of intriguing characters, vile villains, and plenty of paranormal set in London 1804.

Voss was not above using his good looks, charming wit, and debonair style as a way to maneuver many a lady into a dark corner for some necking. He was also not opposed to using and selling bits of gossip as a means of control. This kept him knowledgeable of others' indiscretions or weaknesses, so blackmailing could be considered a past time. He soon learned that knowledge is definitely power and with that sort of power, lots of things and associations could be claimed. What started out as innocent enough in his young life soon became a dangerous game, earning him an unflattering reputation among the ton including the Dracule. Simply put...
“He was rich, titled, handsome, powerful, could bed any woman he wanted whenever he wanted and he was never going to die. What else was he to do with his infinite amount of time?”

Angelica is beautiful, young, and at the peek of her Season. Selecting a husband shouldn't be burdensome since there is no lack of interested suitors to choose from, but propriety's demands can be hard on a girl especially one with a supernatural ability. Angelica's intelligence gathering through her gift of Sight is called upon for good reason and only when asked. She is selective of her clients and profits from her 'transactions' by delivering the money to an orphanage. She does none of this for her own personal gain, which of course is a very admirable trait and proved much to me of her character early on in the story. Angelica proved repeatedly throughout the story why she is a fearless and relatable heroine.

Ms. Gleason designed a different breed of Draculia from the dark vein like tattoo sprouting on their back to the Asthenia or Achilles heel that each uniquely possess. The need to fight Lucifer's hold is at times all consuming where only the strongest will succeed. There are some similarities to the vampires of many stories such as the no sunlight rule, enhanced strength and senses, as well as the pleasurable experience of feeding, which is a most welcome vampiric element. I appreciated Ms. Gleason's descriptive imagery in both the characters and setting as it brings forth an authenticity of that time period very well. The dialogue allows for the reader to be teleported back in time and realize London society in the 1800's with all of it's decadence and scandal. This may not be the easiest read for those looking for quick gratification in plot or for instant relief of the sexual variety, but Ms. Gleason makes the wait well worth it with loads of sensuality and vampires who may have chosen to be less evil, but are no less dangerous. It's very apparent that the rest of the cast have stories to tell as well and I'm looking forward to reading what they have to say.

I've mixed feelings about this one. I enjoyed the time period. I strongly disliked Voss, and liked how Angelica didn't make things easy for him. He does redeem himself later. The ending was a bit surprising, unexpected. ...more
