For those who intend to continue to continue on with the Dark Hunters and plan to give this one a pass because it's YA about Nick as a kid, I would recommend you reconsider. I won't spoil anything, but I will tell you that this one advances the series mythology arc. I haven't read future books, but I can almost promise that this one sets the direction.

When I first saw the cover of this book I assumed it would be a graphic novel. Silly, silly me. I don't know where I got that thought in my head. This book is about how Nick became Kyrian's squire. How they met, how Ash met Nick, and how Nick got caught up in the Dark-Hunter world. It definitely explains the problems grown-up Nick is experiencing. Nick is 14 and being bullied at his school. Wearing clothes from thrift stores in the trendy school is bound to get you noticed for the wrong reasons.

I liked it. Usually I find Kenyions overly descriptive mess of torture and sex and no plot off putting. But here she actually puts her mind on character development and story lines, instead of idiotic women who feel sorry for hungry or hurt warriors. I don't mind romance, but I want it to actually be a bit realistic. I don't understand why you would have sex with someone just because "he had not been touched by a kind person" or some such nonsense. If the guy needs kindnes, pet him. Don't blow h

I'm a really big fan of Sherrilyn's Dark Hunter series but I'm not a big fan of YA (it makes me feel old now!) so I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book, but I'm happy to report I was very wrong! I loved it!
I always liked Nick as he had a wicked sense of humour and because he took care of the people he loved so it was great to go back to his teenage years to see what really shaped him and to see how he became involved in the Dark Hunter world in the first place.
