This quote from the first page was my favorite passage and sums up the entire book rather nicely.

I wasn't the biggest fan of Covet - it was ok. Not terrible, not wonderful, and had some plot flaws that make me wonder how this series is really going to play out, but, it was likable enough that I picked this one up. And I am so glad I did.

As those who have read #1 know, Jim is playing a game where the fate of the world is in balance. Devina, the demon, and Nigel the Archangel are captains for their respective si I think the JR Ward that I know and loved through the first 5 BDB books is back. I wasn't the biggest fan of Covet - it was ok. Not terrible, not wonderful, and had some plot flaws that make me wonder how this series is really going to play out, but, it was likable enough that I picked this one up. And I am so glad I did.

As those who have read #1 know, Jim is playing a game where the fate of the world is in balance. Devina, the demon, and Nigel the Archangel are captains for their respective sides. Jim is the "quarterback" that was agreed to by both sides since they both thought that Jim would sway things in their favor. Nigel and Devina aren't supposed to interfere, but Devina is the queen of interference. Nigel has his moments too, although they aren't as direct and that's where Jim's boys, and Colin (another Archangel) come into play. Good 1- Bad nill at the end of the first book. Now it picks up where we left off.

It appears that the soul in question is Isaac. And he is the male half of the love story duo here. For a military assassin, he really is a likable, or really lovable, guy. Ms. Ward's take on unsanctioned MMA style cage fighting is amusing - and it appears that she must be a fan of the sport. The female half is Isaac's public defender. We know that Matthais (from the first book) is after Isaac and that's where things get interesting. Without spoiling things, there is a pretty decent twist with respect to who the right soul is that the folks are after. And, the way the winner is determined played out other then I would have expected.

Like all of the PNR books, the two who fall for each other do so without really knowing each other, in a really short period of time, and they have some killer sex. And, I don't think it's really a spoiler here to say that all ends well for them (I mean if it didn't it probably wouldn't be published since us readers don't read this stuff for the non-happy ending, right?). The sex isn't as heavy as it is in the first of the BDB, but is a little more then the last few BDB.

The language, the slang and the relationships feels more like the JR Ward that I know and love. The BDB have started to drift (I think the shift to "urban fantasy" and the publishing in hardcover first really impacted that series in a bad way) but this book seems to put the reader back where those books started. It's fun to see references to the familiar setting of Caldwell too. I wonder if there will be any cross over at any point... hmmm.... that could be fun!

The trio of Jim, Ad and Eddie is great. I know there is more to the relationship between Ad and Eddie then has been revealed, but there are hints of it. I hope we come to understand it. And Little by little, I think we will see those three become much closer. The relationships that Ward creates, between those other then our 2 love-birds, is really one of the reasons I like her stuff so much. We get a great glimpse into the whole world she has created, she has rules that govern and she sticks to them (pretty well anyway), and I feel like it is a large group of characters that the books are about, not just the 2 love-birds and one particular adversity.

The biggest downfall here is the villain. Devina is disturbing, to say the least. Reading her chapters is way more important then ready some of the "Lessers" chapters in BDB, but the scene with Jim down in her lair is not something I really wanted to focus on. And thinking that Devina had her hands on Ad and Eddie is all the more creepy. Although it is kind of funny to think about her need to see a therapist about her hoarding/OCD.

I am looking forward to the next one. Hopefully the publishers don't pull the same bait-and-switch into the UF realm with this series. Extra bonus: the preview of Lover Unleashed... :D awesome!! I was wondering who Payne's love interest was going to be - it's given to is with the first 2 words of the preview!

This book continues the story of Jim Heron who is tasked with coming in to a persons life when they're at a crossroads and helping them choose the right path. The decision of these seven people will decide if the souls of everyone on Earth (and those who've passed on) will belong to Heaven or Hell.
I enjoyed the first book in the series, Covet. I felt like this one wasn't as polished. The romance that built between Isaac and Grier felt like it developed too quickly. I have read many books where ...more

Pretty good. Some of the slang grate a bit at times, and I didnt really care which characters lived and which died... none really grabbed me. Like the challenge aspect of the series though. Will probably read the next one.

It shouldn't take 200 pages for a book to start to get interesting. I kept pressing myself to continue to read because I like the author's BDB series and invested effort into that one even though I didn't like some of the books. I wish Ward would quit it with the slang. It's distracting. What does "Cary Granted it out of there," mean anyway?
Since the Matthias storyline seems to be wrapped up, I don't know if I'll read anything else from this series. Looking back, I think the best Fallen Angel bo ...more

I am a big fan of the BDB series so I always expect a lot of a JR ward book. This is not one of my fav books and even if i dont compare it to to BDB, I still feel there is just something more this book needs. Maybe the series is still getting filled out and a few more books down the line I may enjoy it more... I donno.. but as of now.. this was not great just okay enough to like and read.
