This is not a love story, and if you've come to it looking for a vampire romance, you'll be sorely disappointed. Viehl does a great job with the world of the Darkyn - their medieval history, archaic belief systems, twisted relationship with the Brethren. She does not do romance in this novel, and the relationship between Alexandra Keller, a reconstructive surgeon, and Michael Cyprien, vampiric head honcho of the Darkyn in the Americas, is almost like an afterthought. This book really held my attention more so than some others have lately. I eagerly look forward to the next book in series.
