Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) in SOS: Serious Overload of Series

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. I like this book a lot more than I thought I would since urban fantasy isn't a strong interest of mine. However, all of the characters were pretty engaging.

Kate was an awesome female protagonist. Strong-willed, bad ass, and independent. I found her character to be an incredibly good representation of the thoughts, feelings, and human interactions that a real person would have.

Curran is equally as awesome. I've been reading a lot of books lately with huge asshole male interests for the heroine t I like this book a lot more than I thought I would since urban fantasy isn't a strong interest of mine. However, all of the characters were pretty engaging.

Curran is what I feel like those authors were going for but fell far short of the mark. He's strong, dominant, and sarcastic while still managing to be likeable and not abusive (I'm looking at you Jamie from Outlander).

Their relationship is really intriguing too. I expect he'll be her main romantic interest throughout the series even if nothing officially happens for a while. They only share a single kiss at the end of this book but their entire dynamic is really nice.

I also liked Derek's character and thought he was a cute and sweet teenage boy trying to act big and tough and I hope he continues to show up throughout the series as well.

As soon as Crest was introduced as a character I suspected him of maybe being the murderer so I was pleasantly surprised when they through that suspicion into the story and it turned out not to be true. I love when I can guess the twist or who the "bad guy" is but I love even more when I fall for the author's trap and guess the wrong thing. It just makes the book that much more entertaining.

The only thing holding this book back from 5 stars for me was the world-building. What we see of the world in this novel is really interesting but Andrews doesn't really explain it at all. It's very much on a need to know basis that she threw some description of the world in. I prefer to find out a lot about the world up front because I was confused frequently when new aspects of it were introduced without really explaining what they were.

Kate Daniels is a mercenary on a mission to find out who killed her guardian. She's a loner with an attitude. She also has lethal skills and magic to help her with her goal. I found the book difficult to settle into at first. There were so many people, groups of people, and phrases that I didn't seem to have a full explanation of that it made it difficult for me to easily get into the book. I found myself wondering if I had missed or forgotten an explanation of one thing or another as I read. I ...more

This was a book that I decided to try because so many people here on Goodreads said it was so good. When I first started it I wasn't sure that I was going to jump on the band wagon, but I have to say that I'm getting convinced. When I got to where she really got into the investigation that I started getting into the book and from there to the end it was really good.

I'd probably give this more of a 3.5 than a 4 but I'm hopeful that this series will improve as I like the characters and the forming relationships. There are several unanswered questions that I know will be touched upon later. I'll definitely be reading the next in this series. ...more

It reminded me, in some ways, of the Dresden novels, in that we have a very sarcastic hero(ine), there is magic in what is basically a "normal" world, and we have knights, vampires and were-folk. However, other than that bare description, this book bears little resemblance to Jim Butcher's world. In this world, everyone is aware of magic, which only works some of the time. Conversely, "tech" only works when magic doesn't.
