Lake Silence (The World of the Others, #1; The Others, #6) in SOS: Serious Overload of Series

I have to admit, I was of two mind before opening this book. I've been a big fan of Anne Bishop for years. Her Black Jewels trilogy is on my all-time favorites lists. So I was pretty sure I would be a fan of this book also. But ... I want more Meg and Simon and everyone else at Lakeside, so I thought I might not love it. I should have known better. Of course I loved it. Once I picked Lake Silence up, I couldn't put it down until I finished.

In Lake Silence, we meet a whole new cast of characters I have to admit, I was of two mind before opening this book. I've been a big fan of Anne Bishop for years. I want more Meg and Simon and everyone else at Lakeside, so I thought I might not love it. I should have known better. Of course I loved it. Once I picked Lake Silence up, I couldn't put it down until I finished.

In Lake Silence, we meet a whole new cast of characters in the town of Sproing, named after the cute little happy faced critters that beg for carrots (and who a few humans speculate have a hidden, more deadly face ... but no, they're too cute ... right ... right ... ?). Well, an almost brand new cast of characters, there are a couple minor carryovers to the new town, but none of the major players from the first 5 books are in residence.

Vicki is damaged. She's recently divorced from a verbally abusive husband, has no self-esteem because of said abuse, and is prone to panic attacks when confronted with "scary" men. Some might view Vicki as weak, but to me she has hidden strength. Despite what she has been through (and from little hints in the book, I'm sure we don't know everything yet)*, Vicki finds a way to cope with day to day life, rebuilding The Jumble, making connections with Others, and attempting to do the right thing even when terrified. I love that she secretly calls her lawyer, Ilya Sanguinati, Mr. Yummy, even knowing he is one of the terra indigene.

Julian Farrow is an Inuit. One with a special sense of places, which has helped preserve his and a few colleagues lives. He left the force after nearly being murdered by dirty cops and now runs the bookstore in Sproing. He's understands Vicki is not ready for a relationship and takes the long view, willing to be her friend in the now.

Wayne Grimshaw, sent to Sproing to investigate a death, wants to serve and protect the humans, but treads a fine line between that and upsetting the terra indigene. They are always watching and recent events have showed the Elders are done putting up with pesky human annoyances. They'll eat them instead.

Recommended, definitely. If you're already a fan of The Others, you will not be disappointed. If you've yet to start this series, with a brand new cast, you could pick up this book and start mid-series. But why cheat yourself out of the goodness of the first 5 books. Those first five books will also give you a deeper understanding of the characters introduced in Lake Silence. ...more

5+ STARS!! This book was an excellent read. I really this series! I enjoyed reading about the interactions between the Others and the humans. I specially LOVED Aggie, the inquisitive and kind member of the Crowgard family, who was my favorite character in the whole book.

Lake Silence is the first book in the next chapter of Anne Bishop's The Others series. We have left behind the Lakeside courtyard and our beloved Meg and Simon to explore a new area in Thasia. We now find ourselves in Sporing a small rustic town on the shores of Lake Silence, the smallest of the Finger Lakes. While I was sad that there won't be anymore focus on Meg and Simon and their journey I was overjoyed when I learned that there would be more books set in this interesting world. While movin Lake Silence is the first book in the next chapter of Anne Bishop's The Others series. We have left behind the Lakeside courtyard and our beloved Meg and Simon to explore a new area in Thasia. We now find ourselves in Sporing a small rustic town on the shores of Lake Silence, the smallest of the Finger Lakes. While I was sad that there won't be anymore focus on Meg and Simon and their journey I was overjoyed when I learned that there would be more books set in this interesting world. While moving on from the Lakeside gang it seems the story is also taking a step away from the blood prophets. They are mentioned and though not named outright Meg is reached out to at one point, but they are no longer a main focus of the story.

The new cast of characters centers around Vicki DeVine, newly divorced and trying to build a new life for herself after receiving The Jumble as part of her settlement. Vicki is my one small complaint about the book, she is no Meg. Not that I want the same character but I only have so much patience for crippling self-worth issues and seemingly unjustified male induced anxiety. Having grown up in a house with both a physically and emotionally abusive man who was far worse than Vicki's ex is described I found her weakness in certain moments irritating. Luckily everyone else made up for this one flaw.

Officer Grimshaw became a personal favorite for me. He was relatable and likable as a character. It's not hard to understand and sympathize with someone drawn into a mess bigger than what they imagined. There are no real twists or turns in his story or the overall story for that matter but the book does an excellent job of setting the scene for things to come. Many types of terra indigene live in and around The Jumble and the town of Sproing. Including the Sporingers for which the town is named after. They are interesting little creatures and I want to find out more about them. It also seems as if we will get a lot more interaction with Elders in this area as well which I know I look forward to. If you are a fan of the series or Anne's other works I highly recommend picking it up, you won't be disappointed. ...more
