Excellent.

Derek is a lot more layered than I ever imagined. Since most of it is wrapped up in his identity as a shapeshifter, it makes sense that it wouldn't come to the fore until we spent some time in his head.

Julie's complexities are hinted at, too. There's an awful lot here to unpack. Although I know her to be tough with a capacity for deviousness, this story shows there's way more going on with Kate's ward - and Kate will have a shitfit when she realizes how capable Julie truly is.

Derek 'the Boy Wonder' and Julie, the ward of Kate Daniels' finally get their own novella. Julie's still too young, but both she and Derek both realize, although they would never admit it to each other, that they are a bonded pair. This is sweet and awesome, and we finally get to get into Derek's head. And realize that Julie has a secret tutor in the arcane arts. This is a must read for any fan of the Kate Daniels series.
