Sooo, I'm not sure how I feel about this one. The humor was there, as always. And I love Charley and Cookie's friendship and how it survives Charley's memory loss. I loved the romance in this one too. I don't always love Reyes - he can be a little too controlling alpha for me - but I loved him here, patiently waiting. And there's a definite swoon worthy gesture involving a $100 bill. So, I did enjoy the book. But, I felt like it was kind of a placeholder in the series. Nothing really advanced th ...more

My review is going to be really vague in order to avoid spoilers (for the previous book and for this one).

Major events took place in the last few pages of Eighth Grave After Dark & huge secrets were revealed, resulting in one humdinger of an ending. None of which I will tell you about. Spoilers, Sweetie. Spoilers. Suffice it to say, I was quite eager to see where Jones was going to take us next.

Book 9 opens "four weeks, three days, seventeen hours and twelve minutes" after one of those events. A My review is going to be really vague in order to avoid spoilers (for the previous book and for this one).

Book 9 opens "four weeks, three days, seventeen hours and twelve minutes" after one of those events. Again, I won't say much on the specifics, but it was a great set up for this book. I read it in one sitting because I had to find out how issues would be resolved. There were moments of humor and sadness as the main character dealt with fallout from the previous book and in the end I was quite satisfied and touched with how things worked out. The last few sentences again left me wishing I could fast forward to the next book in this series.

About the series: Charley works as a private detective, occasionally helping the police solve cases. More importantly, she sees dead people because she's also the Grim Reaper. Ghosts cross over through her, but sometimes she has to help them out first: pass along one last final message, help a relative deal with the death or identify a murderer. Charley has a unique personality. You know that one person who always has her snark on, saying things that you kind of wish you had the courage to say. She makes you laugh, even as you're shaking your head in disbelief that she actually said whatever it is she said. And sometimes, she can be a little annoying and maybe you want to shake her and say, "Just once would you take something seriously." But then it hits you, she cares really deeply about too many things and carries a burden of responsibility to help those she can. The snark and the jokes and the irreverent attitude are all one huge defense mechanism to help her cope with all those deep feelings and duty. Yep, that's Charley. At least my take on her. She's funny, sarcastic and way to fixated on coffee for her own good, but she'll do what needs to be done in order to help a ghost resolve his/her issues, thus allowing them to let go of Earth and cross over. Her friends are both blessed and cursed to have her in their lives. There's no doubt she loves them and will do anything for them. They just have to resist the urge to strangle her in the process.

Shelves: paranormal, deity-angel, uf, ghost, grim-reaper

Charley has amnesia and all her friends and family are around hoping she gets her memory back.

What I enjoyed:
* I liked Charley as Janey. She still tries and helps people and mostly succeeds.
* Janey ends up helping a lot of people with their problems and they are all interesting
* Reyes was so patient
* A lot happened at the end

What could have been better:
* This book seemed like a break that didn't really move the overall plot forward much
