This started out really good. A contract with a demon to steal a magical object. What could go wrong? I love a good heist. Ocean's Eleven supernatural style with a sexy romance to on top? Yes please! There's an interesting world with a kitchen sink take to supernatural creatures. We even have trolls. I dig that. This book had all the elements to start at three stars and go up from there.

Why did you lie to me book??? I kept looking for a heist. The planning and scheming and schmoozing and well, you know, thieving. Blake tells me this crew has stolen supernatural items before, but doesn't really show how they operate. We've got a witch, vampire and werewolf, but what are their specialties besides their supernatural abilities? Zoey is a safe cracker. Neil is the muscle. Where's the hacker? The grifter? Pickpocket? Anything? Zoey sure as hell isn't a mastermind.(Okay this isn't an episode of Leverage). Anyway, all the interesting stuff that goes into a heist basically happens offscreen. Zoey talks to some people who talk to some other people we never meet and then come back to Zoey with the info. Zoey has no trouble getting info. Everyone in supernatural land is down to gab. Which leads to my number one problem with this book.

Zoey is a gods damned Mary Sue. I feel stupid not picking up on it until the fae kidnapped her. For some reason, every single male person who comes within her line of sight loves her or is fascinated by her. Even the demons! WTeverlovingF? Dev is declaring his devotion during the first date. Daniel loves her because...reasons? Albert the bouncer at Dev's club, Fae lady's henchmen, Troll husband, even Daniel's vampire patron all like her. Why? Because of her light or aura or blood or whatever. Not because of any traits she could have as a person. Not because she a good thief or a master Scrabble player. She's just so interesting and spunky!

The other problem with the book is the characters are paper thin. If there was more time spent on heisting it would have given me a chance to get to the know the characters, but nope. What little I know about Sarah and Neil came in chunks of exposition and just left there. Most of the book was spent on Zoey being manipulated by Daniel, Zoey sexing Daniel, Daniel being jealous of Dev, Daniel being broody, Zoey being mad at Daniel for lying and manipulating her, Zoey saying she loves Daniel even though he lies and manipulates her.

This gets two stars because I did like the supernatural world, the demons were entertaining and the sex scenes were good. They would have been sizzling if the characters had more depth. I mean the book was only 288 pages. There was space to give these people personality. ...more

Reread in 2018 Upgrade to 3.5 stars.
So, the first quarter of 2018 was all about Lexi Blake for me. I love her Masters & Mercenaries series. Finding myself needing a "Demons" shelved book for Book Shelf Bingo and having forgotten quite a bit since picking this up in 2015, I decided to do a reread instead of choosing book 2 in the series. I really enjoyed this the second time around too. Zoey and Daniel's relationship (or lack of one) is complicated by his hiding the true nature of his vampirism. ...more
