Seven years later, I enjoyed this installment just as much as the first go-round. The standout again is character growth. This remains a highly recommended series and one I'm enjoying as a 2023 monthly re-read.

As with each installment in this series, Shadow Rites is jam-packed with action. Another thing readers can expect is continued character growth. That growth is one of my favorite aspects of this series. Jane has changed so much since we first met her in 2009's Skinwalker. This is something that Jane herself acknowledges often as she notices her once lone-wolf lifestyle has grown to include others whom she not only regularly relies on but also shares her home. Her "Yellowrock Clan" increases by three in Shadow Rites , all of whom are initially unwanted, but eventually accepted and life-saving.

In this installment, Jane and her Clan immediately find themselves on the defensive - not against vamps or weres, but witches. As they prep for the Witch Conclave (witches and vamps of the Southeastern U.S. [are meeting to sign] a peace treaty ... for the first time ever) and the expected arrival of the European Vampires, they try to determine what these two witches are after, why they appear to be targeting Jane and what they can do, if anything, to protect against their strong magics.

I love the relationship between Jane and her Yellowrock Securities team, Eli & Alex. It was also great to see Jane and Bruiser further explore their relationship. And, as witches play a huge part in this installment, the Everhart-Trueblood witch family do as well.

Aside from the misquoted Marine battle cry as "Hooyah", which is the Navy's (USMC's battle cry is Oorah), another 5-star read for me. I highly recommend this series for all UF fans. I'm anxious for Faith Hunter's spin-off/set in Jane's world, Soulwood series, Blood of the Earth coming in August. ...more
