As it's been almost a year since I last read a Sentinels book I appreciated the quick recap of the world - Sentinels, high-bloods, etc.

Mika and Bailey couldn't be more different, but their feelings for each other haven't faded despite their years of separation. Mika focused on his responsibilities as a Sentinel while Bailey, a healer, dreamed of a less restrictive life. Ten years ago she left him when he chose to remain in Valhalla.

When Mika's tasked with locating a young acolyte his tracking skills lead him to the swamps of Louisiana and Bailey's front door.

This was a sweet short and refreshed my interest in the series.

PHANTOM EMBRACE by Dianne Duvall (Rating: ✮✮✮✮✮)

Immortal Yuri Sokolov was born with the ability to see spirits, yet he's never seen one as lovely as Cat Seddon, the woman who haunts his home and his dreams. But amid their star-crossed love, a new danger may have Yuri facing a different kind of eternity.

Alternatively, Duvall's short was the perfect salve for the wound left by the events of Night Unbound. The short picks up in the midst of/toward the latter half of the story told in that full installment.

Yuri Stanislav has always been able to see spirits however he's learned that to acknowledge them isn't always the best course of action. Yet, when he notices a mysterious woman lingering, following him on his hunts and making visits to his quarters, he's intrigued. Who is she? To keep her coming back, after noticing that she enjoys exploring the items in his room (she can see an object's history by touching it), he starts adding new things, playing audiobooks versus reading - anything that will allow him to spend more "quiet time" with this lovely spirit. Touched by her obvious sadness, he speaks aloud and surprises her. She was unaware he could see her since, of the Immortals in the house, only Marcus has acknowledged her.

Their story starts as a comfortable companionship then slowly turns into much more. By the end, fans of the series will be equally saddened (view spoiler) and soothed by their touching love story. This is a must-read for Duvall's Immortal Guardians fans. ...more
