Random personal anecdote: I've played the piano for over seven years. It doesn't come naturally to me at all. I struggle through every bar of music when I learn something new, and it often takes me over a month to learn a new song. I suck at reading sheet music and figuring out what all those squiggles on paper mean. The structured, scholarly approach to music doesn't work for me at all.
When I was in the middle of Uprooted, I decided to try to improvise a piano piece. Let go of all the sheets an ...more

I'm honestly so upset that I didn't love this book--I had high hopes!--but goddammit I found myself bored to tears around 30%... (maybe even before that) T_T
I tried, oh, I tried, but after a while I stopped caring about the characters and their problems, and this is a total deal-breaker for me because I read for the characters, everything else comes second.
And even though it is not the central point of the story, the romance in this book is so weird--it's ...more

I loved it! And just because out there are writers like Brandon Sanderson, George martin or Patrick Rothfuss, i didn't give it 5 stars, because those are reserved for them.
But i really enjoyed this book and it was refreshing for me, not being part of a serial but just a standalone book. The writing, the word building, the characterization and the story- i liked it all. I recommend it warmly to everyone who likes a good fantasy with a drop of romance ;) ...more

It was a decent book. It didn't blow me away, but it was just enough fluffy fantasy for me to enjoy once in awhile.

This is easily one of the best books I've read all year. I'll definitely be looking into reading more by this author.

It was nice to have a complete story in one fantasy book.
What I enjoyed:
* Kasia was awesome. She wasn't the MC, but had a good story arc and was interesting.
* Originality in The Wood as the evil(view spoiler)
* the author wasn't afraid to kill characters (view spoiler) ...more

Oooh, this book started out so good! With two best friends living in a small village near the enchanted 'Wood'. And, a majestic 'Dragon' wizard appointed by the King as protector of the valley where they both reside.
The dragon takes a girl from a different village every 10 years; this decade he take Nieska, and not her friend - like everyone was banking on. Nieska has magic; an earthly kind of magic. Like a reincarnated Baba Jaga - magic. Nieska's magic is compatable with the Dragon's magic. Ni ...more

Oh my. Other reviews have done justice to this book better than I can but I loved every minute of reading it. I'm usually one to always pick up a book when I have a spare few minutes. I couldn't do that with this book. If I picked it up, I got lost in it and needed time to spend with it. It's a fairy tale/folklore of the very best kind, not a grim as Grimm's grimmest but not disneyfied either. Like all the best stories, this tells us that growth always requires a cost.

This title dumps readers into a high fantasy world in which an evil Wood is threatening to take over an entire valley full of villages. The Dragon (not your typical kind) holds back the Wood from his remote tower and requires one sacrifice, a girl to come live in his tower with him for ten years. Agnieska is the girl that the Dragon chooses, much to everyone’s surprise, and she begins to discover through lessons by the Dragon that she has an equally powerful magic inside of her. I love how, as a
