The thesis of this book is that happiness is elusive to most of us because -- get ready for this great revelation -- we're not really that good at predicting how we'll feel about future events and we tend to misremember how we felt about past ones. Why this would be a revelation to anyone who ever, say, kept a journal, I don't know. Gilbert is a professor of psychology, so he did a million psychological experiments and his method in writing the book is to basically give a running account of all ...more
