Overhyped and gimmicky, the individual stories are fine for the genre (or, for the case of the Luisa Rey bits, deliberately sub-par), although the spec-fic bits are unexciting unto boring for a fan of the genre.
Unfortunately, Mitchell can't help snarking about his own conceits (one character mocking the comet birthmark; Frobisher wondering if his sextet's structure is a gimmick or brilliance). This emphasizes the artificiality of the entire enterprise.

Just loved. So many people had told me to read this and I kept trying, but could never get engaged in the first chapter.
What finally worked was listening to an audio version while having some lengthy dental work done. Except since I didn't know the whole premise of the nested stories, I got extremely confused when chapter one abruptly ended and suddenly an entirely new voice and story began in a whole different time and setting. I thought that my audiobook download had been corrupted.

Kaleidoscopic novel about The Meaning of Life and everybody's connectedness to everybody else and the looooong arc of the moral universe bending toward justice. Loved the intent and the execution. The narrators are excellent.
