To start, this feels like a cover of Italo Calvino's If on a Winter's Night a Traveler. Six unrelated narratives that tie into a central theme that go across time and space. Great! However, the narratives in Cloud Atlas are related in terms of the internal narrative, not so much as IoaWNaT's (self-conscious note: awkward acronyms are fun) meta-novel.

So, I thought this was one of the best books I've ever "read." I'd certainly put it on everyone's essential reading list. The structure is admirably intelligent, dovetailing with some essential questions built into this book -- is reincarnation for real? what meaning do our lives have? what remains of us after we die? -- but also bringing eras and voices and characters to vivid life, and building in a cyclical sense which echoed the themes of the book.
