Main characters that have nearly paralyzing mental issues make me wary. Usually, in the face of extreme neurosis, story lines suffer due to the extreme constraints the main character puts on themselves. That is most definitely not the case in Mind Games. Carolyn Crane does a superb job of creating a character that not only has a debilitating psychological problem, but goes on to utilize this problem in a unique and fascinating way.

I love me some realistic heroines, and I think Justine topped the charts. I've never read a book about a heroine prone to panic attacks (something Karen and anyone who is good friends with me can affirm I suffer from), which made me feel closer to her character on a totally new level. She never annoyed me--okay, maybe once or twice---and she was funny as hell. No heroine has ever thrown a frying pan at someone she's pissed at, and I totally appreciated that sort of twisted humor.

Want to take a bit of a diversion from the typical urban fantasy? Want to take a handful or urban fantasy and a handful of comic book and smoosh them up into a little ball? Want to get vicariously involved in a love triangle? Then why aren't you reading Mind Games?
Carolyn Crane's debut novel was absolutely wonderful! It did take me about 80 - 100 pages to really connect with Justine and get to the point of "I must read this book until I'm so tired I fall asleep with it on my face", but once I w ...more
