I know it is odd to listen to an audiobook for a graphic novel but this one was very much worth listening to. Krosoczka did a fabulous job on this and the full cast, sound effects, etc were great. Also how much of a community effort this was by having family and friends do the voicing of various characters add extra level of meaning.

This was absolutely brilliant, and the only reason I didn't give it a fifth star is that I can't figure out who the intended audience is. The author has a following among kids for his graphic stories, but this is clearly for much older, maybe older teens or adults. The difficulty is that much of the story is set during his early teen years, so that makes it tougher to get older teens to read it. HEY, KIDDO is @studiojjk honest and engaging graphic memoir about his early life and teen years. Krosoczka is raised by his maternal grandparents because his mother is either in jail or recovery from her heroin addiction. Plus, he doesn’t come to know who his father is until many years later.

The author’s note at the end reduced me to tears and is a moving tribute to Krosoczka’s family. This graphic novel beautifully captured a childhood ripped apart by a parent’s addiction and that childhood slowly and imperfectly being mended back together by loving, complex grandparents. Art is s big hit or miss for me with graphic novels but I liked it lot here, even with the minimal color use. I loved the he integrated real letters he’d received over the years as well.
