This was a hard book to read, and also a hard book to put down and stop reading.
The basic premise of the book, that the main character had to maintain two versions of herself to both be adequately Black and also able to cope with the White world of her school was just heartbreaking on its own. Combined with the shooting of one of her friends, and her background of having witnessed the death of another close friend in childhood, it kept getting worse and worse.
