I was considering giving this one a fifth star, because most of the story is beautifully written and intriguing. It might have been nice to have a handle on this strange world of wars over what appear to be small water sources. It could be a dystopian future or an alternate world, but we really don't know. All we learn during the story is that a LOT of resources are being devoted to a battle over nothing much, as described.

This is an excellent read. As usual, it's the characters that bring the story home to me. The plot is well-crafted and the theme is discovered through not one but several stories. The subject is not light and it is not really a story about a boy and his fox. It's about emotion. "Oh, let me tell you, feeling are all dangerous. Love, Hope...Ha! Hope! You talk about dangerous, eh?" It's about responsibility and courage. Each character faces personal challenges and each grows into the responsibility
