Luckily, I was never forced to read this for school, or I would have had a lower opinion of it. As it is, I read it voluntarily for a book club, and managed to struggle my way through it.
It is NOT a bad book, but it is a difficult read, due to the style and the story. It's about poverty in the period just before the Roaring 20s, and told in such a way that folks who had experienced the later Depression could also identify with it, very strongly.
