I was very impressed with this historical fiction novel about a Malayan mother, Cecily Alcantara, who becomes a spy for the invading Japanese forces during WWII mainly due to a man, Fujiwara, with whom she became romantically involved even though both of them were married.

This was a tear-jerker and very heartbreaking and difficult to read novel. I don't believe I've read of Malaya being occupied by Japanese before. Like most of the WWII books, the men/soldiers were disgusting pigs who'd rape gir ...more

Beautiful and captivating, a telling of Mayalas experience with the Japanese invasion of Mayalsia during WW2. This was a new side of the war for me a new perspective for me to learn about. Thank you to the author for sharing her familys experience and learning more about others affected to teach us something new. If you love WW2 historical fiction, ww2 history or even just historical fiction with international settings…this book is a solid 4 star read. I think the thing that held me back is some ...more
