This mystery was definitely a slow-burn, but it was very compelling and I finished it in a day. The writing was so good that it felt more like a family drama or literary fiction instead of a mystery. Being a native Iowan, the author did a fantastic job laying out the setting and what it is like living in a small town – I swear I’ve seen the places she describes and met real-life versions of some of the characters. The story in this moved a bit slowly for me at a lot of points in the book. I liked the characters but I didn’t love any of them. I do think that it’s hard to use the storyline of the main character going home to an estranged family and daughter with an old crime in the background that needs to be solved. There aren’t many fresh takes for this trope and I definitely predicted the ending early on. I thought it was good, but I didn’t love it.
