I would give this 4.25-4.5 stars.
This is no THUG but it’s still really enjoyable. I liked that the story also takes place in Garden Heights and felt like I could connect with the characters. I also enjoyed the way the author took on major issues like race, class and sexuality in a way that’s manageable yet still thought-provoking.

This was good. I wasn't as big of a fan of this book as I was of The Hate U Give, but it was still good. Bri, the main character, lives in the same neighborhood as Starr from The Hate U Give. Bri's dream is to become the next best rap artist. Bri needs to deal with some family drama and hardships, mostly due to the color of their skin.

How can you not appreciate books written by the same author that takes place in the same neighborhood?! On the come up is set in the same Garden Heights that THUG is with a story from a completely different lens. Drug dealers, drug addicts, getting clean and staying clean, trust issues, creating your own identity, setting a good example....this book has it all.
