Surprising, heart-breaking story about a broken family and the way they survive.
I'm sad this book has sat on my shelf for years. It was an interesting story about a young girl, her hard life and her struggle to survive. She's grown up with her brother, raised by her uncle. Her dad died when she was young and her mom went away to jail, so she was pulled from possible foster care to her uncle's care. Not that that care's been easy or loving. She's grown up barely surviving.

This was another Book of the Month choice for me from July.
The beginning of this book for me started off slow. I really found myself not connecting, or caring, about any of the characters. That did eventually change and I couldn't wait to find out more, to see how it was going to end and what would happen to everyone.
I can see how this book could be daunting if you don't have any knowledge of poker since there is a lot of references to it, so it helped that I knew what was going on.

This book was just meh for me. The story was okay just nothing that was terribly exciting. Took me a while to finish it.
