Couldn't finish this book. The main characters(especially Elsa & Lareda) - well other than Rosa - were not likeable, irritating really. Many of their actions were not believable, just used to create over done drama. As many have said, it was depressing, very depressing. After the 3rd inconsistency of editing, I had to stop. Several reviews said if you like Grapes of Wrath, this was a must read -nope, nope not anywhere near the writing masterpiece of that classic.

This one was a good historical fiction story. Plot was generally good, and I appreciated the Great Depression era setting in Texas and California along with Elsa’s struggle to survive with her daughter Loreda and son Ant. I would have loved more character development since some of the relationships felt thrown together and lacked depth. It all felt a bit predictable to me. Kristin Hannah did it again! She artfully weaves a story so beautiful that you just don’t want it to end and yet you read it so quickly because you can’t put it down.
I had little prior knowledge about The Great Depression or the Dust Bowl. This is a time period of our history that we should learn more about so we can learn from it.
