What Members Thought

Couldn't finish this book. The main characters(especially Elsa & Lareda) - well other than Rosa - were not likeable, irritating really. Many of their actions were not believable, just used to create over done drama. As many have said, it was depressing, very depressing. After the 3rd inconsistency of editing, I had to stop. Several reviews said if you like Grapes of Wrath, this was a must read -nope, nope not anywhere near the writing masterpiece of that classic.

"I sold my soul to the company store." This is a part of American history that is sometimes missed when we transition from early American history to modern, and is happening at the same time formerly enslaved people are also tied to land through sharecropping. I'm so glad KH wove it into this story of the Dust Bowl.

Kristin Hannah did it again! She artfully weaves a story so beautiful that you just don’t want it to end and yet you read it so quickly because you can’t put it down.
I had little prior knowledge about The Great Depression or the Dust Bowl. This is a time period of our history that we should learn more about so we can learn from it.

I likely would have struggled reading this because although interesting, at time I felt like it was a bit slow. The audio version was fantastic and I’d highly recommend it. Historical fiction isn’t always my favorite but I do love that the story is told from the woman’s perspective and it is an important story to be told.
