I get the Kristin Hannah hype. I didn’t know much about this period of time outside of the basics - after reading this, I’m motivated to deep dive and learn more about this part of our history. This book is an incredible story about humanity and resilience, and Hannah has such an incredible way of weaving everything in (complex relationship dynamics, societal issues, etc) without anything overpowering the other. I teared up multiple times and the end was the plot twist I wasn’t expecting.

I can definitely see the appeal/value in this book, especially since this is a period of time that truly happened and should be learned about. However, wow, I am not a fan of Kristin Hannah's writing. It was somehow extremely fast (due to its lack of description - I can't believe that the novel only spent mere paragraphs to talk about these life-changing moments??) but also incredibly boring and slow. I love this so much more than I was anticipating! The size of this book is intimidating for me, especially with it being in a genre I don’t tend to read a lot of. However, this book filled me with so many different emotions. Once I was fully immersed in the story, I couldn’t put it down. A well-deserved 5 stars, and I can’t wait to read more Kristin Hannah novels!
