Wow! Kristin Hannah has outdone herself! She brings the Great Depression to light in such a way that it's almost impossible not to have that "you-were-there" feeling as you read. It was such a difficult time in history and the lessons to be learned are powerful. The connection is made to the pandemic we all experienced in 2020 and she touches on it in her "Authors Note" so when you read this book, please be sure to read it too.

“Hope is a coin I carry: an American penny, given to me by a man I came to love. There were times in my journey when I felt as if that penny and the hope it represented were the only things that kept me going.”
I don't know whether to keep crying or step onto my soap box. Although this book is set in the past it couldn't be more relatable with the hardships we have experienced this past year with the pandemic. I honestly didn't think I would love this book as much as I did. I always thought that ...more

Wow. So many feelings. I grew up in Oklahoma and learned about the Dust Bowl days in school as well as via family stories. Times were hard and ugly but this book captured something that was missing in that historical learning. The resilience and willingness to fight for what and who you love is an amazing thing. This was a beautiful story.

This was a great historical fiction novel. I enjoyed learning about the Depression and following this sweet family and their journey to survive and live. My grandmother grew up during this era and I never understood why she kept things like used tin foil or plastic wrap. I have an appreciation for this time period and the struggle that individuals faced during this time. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys stories of family, love, survival, and American history.

4.5 stars.
I keep describing this one as "The Grapes of Wrath" written with modern language and a female prototagonist / POV. And I'm grateful to read non-WWII historical fiction. I love it, but variety is the spice of life.
I'm not suggesting Hannah is Steinbeck, of course, but this is a well researched and overall excellent historical fiction read. Highly recommended! ...more
