I enjoyed this book and the strong heroines in it. But I did not like it as much as Uprooted. My expectations were too high I think. I feel that I have to justify why I didn't give it a 5 because even though it was a good book, it could have been better. Here are my reasons:
1. Too many characters. I thought at first the book was going to be about Miryem but no. There were at least 3 main characters and then even more perspectives from minor characters.
2. But no Staryk king's point of view! Why? ...more

I like fairy tale retellings so I figured I would love this book and I was not disappointed. I started out thinking it was based on Rapunzel. I found later that it was based on Rumpelstiltskin. Either way, I enjoyed it a lot. The story was told from the point of view of a few of the different characters. Their voices were unique enough that I was clear on who was talking most of the time. I had some issues with the Staryk king, and the beginning was slow. But the last 100 pages or so...I would give 10 stars.

A poor moneylender’s daughter who becomes the object of a Staryk lord’s desire for silver in this icy fantasy full of magic. I loved everything about this book, from the snow-covered settings to the way the women in the book determine their own worth and fight against their foes.
