I once tried to read a book on Mao, aptly titled "Mao". I was never able to get through it. The names and details were a bit daunting. This book was so meticulously researched that I felt the author must have lived through this nightmare. She did not, but her acknowledgments in the back chronicle the investment of time she put into bringing her readers front and center in the lives of Joy, Pearl and May.
