This book is one of the few focused specifically on how to manage projects and teams of knowledge-workers. It teaches the reader how management might retain workers and their essential skills instead of treating them like cattle. It treats the central problem of management is sociology and not technology. Keeping knowledge-workers happy and productive requires humanity and not scorched-earth policies.

I read the previous edition, and I was really hoping that this edition would update the content for the things that have changed since then. Unfortunately, it still seems pretty dated. There's a reference to microfiche readers when designing an ideal workspace. The chapter on how distracting phones are is still there (my phone probably rings once or twice a week... I don't find that terribly distracting). The chapter on unnecessary meetings calls out daily meetings, but doesn't make any specific
