This book took me forever to finish. It wasn't unputdownable or engrossing, but it was good. It was as dark and violent a follow up to DoSaB as there could have been, and a really painful story of a war with no purpose. Maybe that's why it was hard for me to get through. Karou, mad at Akiva, does what she was mad at him for doing and falls into continuing a war whose only goal is death. Akiva is sad and wants to take it all back. Other characters are introduced and killed off... it is bloody and ...more

Darker than Daughter of Smoke & Bone, this answers a lot of questions from the first book. This is a great series for fantasy-lovers, with enough romance to entice teen girls, but not enough to turn off teen boys.

3.5. Needed some work on pacing and perhaps several chapters trimmed, but overall a very satisfying sequel to Daughter of Smoke and Bone.

This book (and the audio version) lived up to the promise of the first, following the diverging paths of Karue (chimera) and Akiva (seraph). Laini Taylor -- what gorgeous writing, what amazing imagination, such fully-fleshed worlds she creates! Now my hope is that she can sustain these levels for the final book of the trilogy.
Wow.
