Jacqueline Woodson fans, rejoice! Her latest book is a good one!
I enjoyed this book so much I read it twice in a row. This is the story of Laurel who struggles with meth addiction. Oh, she wants to quit so her younger brother Jesse Jr. will look up to her, she has a loving father, a best friend, cheerleading. . . but the meth calls to her too . . . a couple snorts or smokes and all her pain and memories of the tragic losses of her mother and grandmother will be gone. So another book about meth.
NOT.
Beneath a Meth Moon isn't just another book about meth addiction. Jacqueline Woodson can't write "just another book" because Jacqueline Woodson is amazing.
This is a heart-breaking story. Not just the story of fifteen-year-old Laurel and her fight with the monster that is meth, but it is also about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. While I don't really have any complaints about this post-Katrina drug abuse story, and there is some beautiful trademark Woodson language, I never really connected with Laurel and for me it failed to pack an emotional punch. ...more
