Beyond brilliant.
What I love is, it is not necessarily something I would love - it is not as warm as most of my favorite books, and though I love town stories, they can definitely be hit or miss - but it is perfect. On several levels.
Firstly, this is a solid world, unlike some books. The mythology is clear and strong, the world of Rollrock is easy to see and lovely to read about. None of the characters are overly-likeable, but they're also not so horrible that you can't care about them. I guess, ...more

This whole book was so raw and beautiful- I even liked this story more than Tender Morsels. Margo's writing is just so lyrical, I forgot how much I loved it. I think this might just sneak a spot on my all time favorites list!
For those of you who found it hard to digest the subject matter in Tender Morsel, but loved the intensity then I think you'll love this one, which is a bit tamer but doesn't let up on the emotions.

"Rollrock island is a lonely rock of gulls and waves, blunt fishermen and their homely wives. Life is hard for the families who must wring a poor living from the stormy seas. But Rollrock is also a place of magic - the scary, salty-real sort of magic that changes lives forever. Down on the windswept beach, where the seals lie in herds, the outcast sea witch Misskaella casts her spells - and brings forth girls from the sea - girls with long, pale limbs and faces of haunting innocence and loveline

Since I strongly disliked Tender Morsels, I was not looking forward to reading this one, but because it was shortlisted for the coveted pyrite Printz, I just had to buckle down and read it. And I'm glad I did! After a slow start with Misskaella's story, the pacing really picks up with Dominic and Daniel's narratives. The grown-up reader in me respected the mature themes of choosing and honoring marriage partners amid sexual desire and the deep sadness that comes with being separated from your ho

I just didn't get this book. I'm sure it's just me since the other reviews were all very positive.

I loved the concept of this book... following a town from normal sea town, to mermaids replacing all the women and beyond. I've never read a book like this before and I was fascinated through long stretches of the book. Some parts of the story really dragged and I did kind of wish years were given for the sections to make it slightly easier for readers to tell when in the timeline they have entered the story. Ultimately a really interesting, engrossing read that a certain kind of upper-level hig
