A powerful free-verse novel that I gulped down in one setting. Purposefully raw and unsettling, this book will provoke discussion.
Will leaves his apartment one day, tucking his brother's gun in the back of his jeans, hoping to track down his deceased brother's killer. What happens next is a Dickens' Christmas Carol type situation that proves chilling and grossly appropriate for this time of year. I love a novel told in verse. I love a novel with an ambiguous ending. This novel is both. I'm anxious for someone else to read it, so I can have a discussion about it because I'm not sure if I missed something or if I'm supposed to still be questioning it.

Reynolds did an amazing job reading his work, and I loved the explanation of why he felt it important for a poet to do so. Also, the ending. PERFECT!
(There were parts in the middle when I thought it was leaning towards didactic, but the ending totally saved it.)

Not what I was expecting. Powerful as all Jason Reynolds books are, I just don’t feel it’s a five star book like Ghost or All American Boys.
