This is, without a doubt, the strangest, craziest book I've ever read. And I loved every weird minute of it.
Vassa is a likable character (most of the time). Erg is delightfully sassy. The Russian fairy tale aspects were interesting and drew me into the book. I had this suggested to me because I like Leigh Bardugo's novels and I would say with complete confidence that if you're into Leigh Bardugo's books, you'll probably be into this one.

I am not the reader for this book. It may appeal to those that enjoy dark fairy tales and whimsical wordplay.
The world building was cool but much like Brooklyn itself, simply not for me.
A lovely modern Baba Yaga story. Just the right balance of secretive magic world and confused human. The bones of the old Vassilissa story are there enough to feel familiar but shifted to make a different kind of sense. Unlike many modern fairy tales this one keeps many of the rules that govern the classic stories and old school fairy worlds, which I quite enjoyed. I'd love to see more of this particular world.

4 1/2 stars. I LOVE how the author so creatively took the classic folktale, added a modern flavor, and dropped it in today's Brooklyn and made it all work. The dialogue seemed a bit stilted and tripped me up a bit, but otherwise I have no complaints. I will be keeping an eye on this author!
