So, this was definitely a powerful, great novel but I have to confess I'm surprised it is listed on North Carolina's Battle of the Books for 6th graders to read. There is rape off-page. It is handled as gently as possible considering the age of the readers but...I just am not sure I would feel comfortable with my 6th grader reading about knowing about rape quite yet.

Excellent story about another African industry (cacao) where human trafficking is used to produce the product. This should be a sobering read for anyone addicted to chocolate in any form. Although it is fiction, I felt it did a very good job of showing conditions in a large industrial cacao operation.
