At first I found The Book Thief slow going--stylistically, it is not straight ahead, but told from the pov of a soul-catcher, the taker of souls after death. It intersperses narrative with commentary, definitions, and other authorial techniques, which stylistically makes for a rougher reading ride.

One of the most beautifully-written stories I have ever read. Zusak has a non-traditional approach to language, but has done a phenomenal job. I was reading along with Mark Reads but got to the beginning of Part Ten and just had to read through to the end. I promised myself I wouldn't, but after the first 'chapter' of Part Ten, I couldn't not finish today. This is a tragic but ultimately uplifting book, written with a clear love for the effect of words.

This is an achingly beautiful book. The author is a true wordsmith and some of his turns of phrase were absolute gems.
One disclaimer: this is not a a fast, page-turning read. It is honest to goodness literature, in the best sense of the word. It left me fully satisfied, and yet wishing for more. I look forward to whatever else this author delves into. Within the first few pages, it's clear you're in good hands with Mr. Zusak. ...more
