As a recent discoverer of The Walking Dead show, I was looking for something to help with the withdrawals of watching 20 or so shows during a recent marathon. Thank you, Rot & Ruin!! I was never a fan of zombie movies, books, shows, etc. before.... until now!! I love how the author focuses on the living and the post-apocolyptic world. Rot & Ruin is the first zombie book I have read and it is quiet good. It's not totally what I had in mind at first, but i was actually thinking of the cliche in which a town will be infested in zombie

Rot & Ruin is the first zombie book I have read and it is quiet good. It's not totally what I had in mind at first, but i was actually thinking of the cliche in which a town will be infested in zombies and there'll be a group people who'll do the right thing and correct the order. Thank you, Jonathan Maberry for correcting me that illusion. I think this series has a lot of potential. I was actually kicking myself for not getting the 2nd book when I had the chance, and now I'm left imagining there next adventure. This book made me feel emotionally and physically exhausted, thinking how heart-stopping the events were especially when they were battling it out with the bounty hunters. Oh boy, that was good. I honestly love the characters in which made up how worth while this novel was. I LOVE TOM IMURA, he is so cool, composed, noble, smart and strong *drool*, and also Benny, Nix, Chong, and Morgie. I was feeling interested of The Lost Girl. She's like Tom, but a girl. :)

For a zombie book, this wasn't much of a scare there. Though I've been hiding under my covers while reading this. But in great honesty, for a zombie apocalyptic book, I was in great awe how beautifully written and how thought-provoking this was. Though this is my first zombie book, I must say this one's out of the ordinary, and basing on other reviews,they pretty much think the same.

I cannot write the "proper" review for Rot & Ruin, basically I was just gushing on how good this was, but I'm pretty sure I can give much justice once I had my hands on Dust & Decay. Thank goodness this turns out to be a great read for me, and encourages me to read other Zombie Infested books. :)

You guys, you better read this. Totally good catch.

I really enjoyed this although I wish I had read it when I was younger because it really read like a young adult book. This isn't necessarily a bad thing but I feel like if this had been written for an older audience it would have been way creepier. Another issue I had is the fact that all of the bounty hunters were men and the only real female hero in the novel was the lost girl. She was the only one who took care of herself without any man having to save her. Even Nix, although she tries to defend herself and is perceived as tough in the end, is really only in the novel to serve as Benny's love interest. And even the lost girl, Tom and Benny seem to have it in their mind that they need to “save” her, when I personally think besides living alone for so long, was doing really well for herself. I think she can make up her own mind if she wants to rejoin society or not, but after experiencing everything in her life who can blame her for wanting to live away from other people? I definitely would be suspicious.

AND one last thing that kind of irritated me was the thought process for killing the zombies and the whole "zombies were people" train of thought by Tom. At first I was on board and kind of liked the nice idea that Tom was painting for Benny, about the zombies and respecting them, especially after the scene with the people cutting up the zombies and essentially playing with them. BUT after I thought about it...if I ever turned into a zombie and actually tried to eat other living people I would really hope someone would kill me! Just because I WAS a person doesn't mean I am now and the fact that you are keeping me alive when my sole purpose in life now is to kill other people actually really pisses me off. The whole idea of putting people to rest for their families is still a really nice idea but purposely not killing zombies because their families didn't request you to is insane. I guess the only upside is this is a unique idea I have never read in a zombie book before. I just don't necessarily agree with it, and I don't think it is Tom's place to decide that for people who obviously can't speak for themselves anymore.

BUT Overall it is an amazing novel with a great underlying story about human nature and good vs. evil. It was also refreshing to read a main character that wasn't the star of the show. Benny's older brother Tom was clearly superior in almost every other way to Benny, even though Benny is the main character. Tom in a famous Bounty Hunter, he understands the world as it really is, he is very intelligent, thoughtful and a great character to read. Benny sometimes made me want to bash my head against a wall at how stupid he was being but there is something endearing about him that make you cheer for him, even in the face of total adversary.

Definitely going to read the next installment Dust and Decay, the cover is creepily gorgeous! ...more

I have been putting this book off for a while now because I really disliked the name of the book (it seemed to cliche). Well, I'm glad I finally gave it a chance because I really enjoyed it! It had action, some romance, and of course my favorite... ZOMBIES! Looking forward to reading book #2 ...more
