Ender Wiggin is an engaging character. Cards creates an absorbing story of a young boy who recruited for military training at a renown battle school. Ender, who is six at the beginning of the story, must navigate a treacherous environment that emphasizes winning at all cost. As he grows up, he is shuttled off to another facility to play war games. Or so he thinks. Ender leads of group of recruits through these war games against an unknown alien race. Is it a game or its it war?

This book had a protagonist that was interesting, scary and sometimes you felt sympathy for. He was not a cut and dry good guy. You meet him when he is 6 years old and follow him through all of his training to become the best Commander ever. He and his two siblings are geniuses which makes all three of them frightening but fascinating.

So shoot me. I wasn't as in love with this as everyone else. I think people built it up so much it was destined to be a let down for me. It happens. Still a good read over all. Kind of depressing. I will say I was impressed that it was written in the 70's as I think it still holds up well. ...more
