I’ve read this book a gazillion times. I just finished... Again. And again, I still love it just as much as I did the first time.

I picked up Collins’ newest book, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and enjoyed being back in Panem, so decided I needed Katniss and Peeta back. The Hunger Games trilogy is one of my comfort reads.

I’m a fan of dystopian books. And THG is among the best of this genre, for me.

Similar to my friend Arushi on here, I had no desire to read this book whatsoever when I first saw it. And then, just like Arushi, it was everywhere. I put off reading it until almost the entire known world had read every book, because I was so afraid of ruining the experience by not reading it to my fullest. There are times when the sheepy decisions of the masses make you shake your head and wish that you had moved to Costa Rica. Those times include the 'Whoomp, there it is!' years, IMHO. And then there are those times when those same sheep make pretty good decisions. What a burden for the holier-than-thou, the eschewer (not accepted in Scrabble) of all things trendy, the misanthrope who will wait a year to watch it at home rather than commune with the sheep.

I went to a really great concert in Clearwater, Florida once. It was a Norah Jones concert. She played in a little park by the water and it was a beautiful, clear evening. At sunset. No lie. There were people with blankets and wine and children strewn about the lawn and everyone, absolutely everyone, was relaxed. When Norah Jones became popular I remember thinking that it was really great that everyone loved her because she was, well, really great. How can you not love her? Well, I am sure that there are some people who find a way, but clearly they were few and far between. Score One for the sheep.

Like everyone else, I have also become a fan of Stephanie Meyer, and not just for Twilight, though I enjoyed the saga a great deal. It was suspenseful and fun and sexy. I found it to be a great read. I also loved the Host, which I DON'T think I've reviewed here. I will have to do that one next! But I consider this grudging acceptance of my enjoyment of her storytelling Score Two for the sheep.

Having made this transformation, I decided to go ahead and read The Hunger Games. And I loved it. It is completely horrifying, as was its intent, and yet fascinating at the same time. Though the audience of the Games in the story is seen as sort of bloodthirsty and sickly fascinated, you find yourself feeling the same way once the Games begin. It is a frightening dystopian story, which is very popular right now, and I think it is one of the better ones. My only criticism would be that the ending seemed a little abrupt. I know it is a trilogy (reading 2 at the moment), but it seemed to fail to end as a stand-alone book would do and felt a little odd. Overall, I wholeheartedly recommend it for the fan of dystopias.
