I absolutely loved this book. It's not the most beautifully written novel, but the prose is well-written and moves the story along quickly. While technically a fantasy, I suppose, it really reads more like historical fiction with a large dose of magical realism. At its heart it's a story of immigrants in New York at the very end of the nineteenth century. Amazing that a work of such complexity and depth is Wecker's first. Like all the best fantasies, she uses humans and non-humans and their interactions to explore deeper ideas such as morality, free will, what it means to have a soul, etc. Wecker sets the story in 1890s New York and incorporates the numerous immigrants and their cultures, beliefs, and myths to build a rich setting with better-developed characters than many more experienced authors.
