Perhaps The Great American Novel? In hindsight, it's much better, more readable, than Tolstoy's version. Yes, Mitchell's American version of Tolstoy's "War and Peace" is exactly that:
1) Both open with a party (one a bbq, one in a drawing room).
2) Scarlett and Pierre, our heroine/hero, are born into money.
3) Scarlett and Pierre are both charged with rebuilding Atlanta/Moscow.
4) Scarlett and Pierre both marry the wrong persons. Neither ever do get it right.
5) There are huge set pieces, etc.
