I hardly ever watch Westerns on TV or in the cinema, I don't find the outdoor male-dominated lifestyle appealing and I normally have little interest in their historical setting. Nevertheless, I have just raced through almost 900 pages of an epic Western novel which has proved thrilling, fascinating and totally enjoyable.

Felt at home in the prose right away. I notice how much my perspective on how other people live have changed: A person in the book is living in a one house settlement near a road but far from everything and rarely see any other people. Mail is about once a month. The children have no playmates outside the family and will gather to just look at people passing the place. That was just how things were.
