I jumped into this book after reading Anna Karenina and loving it. I thought the next logical step is to get myself more of that from the other great Russian author of the time. Perhaps my expectations weren’t set right, and the 3 stars might come partly from that… here we go:

I read Crime and Punishment & The Brothers Karamazov because once I was told that they’re great books of all time that one must read (Thanks to Benjamin who recommended me to read TBK) and I am now deeply convinced so upon finishing TBK.

I didn’t expect that TBK would be so truthful that at some points it touched me so much with such realistic embodiment of the characters and story that’s deeply rooted in the 19th century Russian society. The storyline is simple, about a murder of Fyodor, a scoun I read Crime and Punishment & The Brothers Karamazov because once I was told that they’re great books of all time that one must read (Thanks to Benjamin who recommended me to read TBK) and I am now deeply convinced so upon finishing TBK.

I didn’t expect that TBK would be so truthful that at some points it touched me so much with such realistic embodiment of the characters and story that’s deeply rooted in the 19th century Russian society. The storyline is simple, about a murder of Fyodor, a scoundrel, sensualist, who is an absent father to three of his legitimate sons: Dmitri, Ivan, Alyosha and illegitimate one: Smerdyakov.

Dmitri is an embodiment of hedonistic life, a sensualist that he’d spent all of his fortune for his own pleasure. Mother died, abandoned by the father since he was a kid.

Ivan is an intellectual, proud of his advancement and free thinking. Also abandoned by the father. I believe he was a Deist, who later questioned why God is such a tyrant, left human to suffer on earth.

Alyosha is more spiritual, he went to the monastery and become a monk. A faithful man, kind and forgiving. He learned Christianity through Father Zosima. Liked by all the people in town.

Smerdyakov is a cynical man, intellectual like Ivan, who unfortunately poor and got to live as a servant for his ‘biological’ father.

While in CP the beauty is found within monologues, in TBK it’s found in the thoughtful long dialogues and anecdotes. It’s focus much about faith, existence of God, doubts, love, free will, but I think TBK isn’t dragging you out of your faith but more sincerely to explore one’s view of life as seen in life of the brothers.

I thought I’d relate much with Alyosha. He’s an epitome of a good man, he rarely speaks and very kind to each other also faithful to his brothers. I inclined more towards Dmitri, such stubborn and unfortunate man (Maybe I was reflecting Alyosha’s love towards his brother Dmitri, hence I inclined so much to him)

This book is so rich and multi dimensional. I couldn’t explain it further since it takes so much pages to write. It’s a wise book that I highly recommend you to read.

I think this just became my favorite novel of all time. There is just such an amazing amount of depth to this novel. It covers so much of what it is like to be human and to live in a society of humans. The character development is the best I have ever read. The main focus of the novel is the dichotomy of good and evil, and how we as humans make sense of our lives and the eternal questions we have about God and morality.
