Dostoyevsky's status as one of the Russian masters is fully deserved, and this is probably his greatest masterpiece, but it is a long book! I recommend this edition for its lively modern translation and excellent notes. ...more

Very well written. Alyosha is a great spiritual character from whom we can learn a lot. I enjoyed his lectures and those of people around him. But the main story was strange. The Brothers Karamazov was written nearly 150 years back. But it feels surprisingly modern.
Dostoyevsky has woven a tale of three (or perhaps four) brothers with very distinct worldviews, in order to deal with issues of religion, faith, science, family, superstition, death, law and crime.

It is a dense work of philosophy written as fiction and is definitely not an easy read. However it's one of the better books that I have read in recent times.
